Road trip part 1: Adelaide to Port Fairy

I'm writing to you from a little town called Port Fairy. It is a small fishing town and we're spending the night there before we head off to the Grampians tomorrow.

Yesterday we picked up our car from Adelaide and slowly made our way to our first overnight stay: Robe. Also a small coastal town, lonely planet suggests it's a scenic little place, so we go and check it out. The guide sure was right about one thing: it's little (and admittedly it is scenic). The backpackers we're staying at is far from little though. It's called the Robe Lakeside Manor and it sure is a manor. The whole building had so much character about it. Along with the lovely owners it made us enjoy our stay at this little palace very much. The only thing we didn't like all that much: the weather. It was actually quite cold and I found myself in sweats and a fleece hoody to keep myself warm at night. What a shock after the 42 degrees we had in Alice....Next morning up bright and early for the second leg of our road trip: off to Port Fairy.

The trip to Port Fairy wasn't quite as scenic as we'd hoped and the weather wasn't all that terrific either. We made a few stops, one of them at Mt Gambier, wich is famous for it's Blue Lake. And boy, was it Blue! The pictures don't do the color justice... the lake showed the most amazing shades of blue we'd ever seen in our whole lives. After that we went on to Port Fairy. Arriving too early we decided to spend some time on the beach and chill out in a little cafe along main street. At 5 we headed off to the backpackers to check in, and afterwards we headed off to main street for some chinese food. After that we went for an after dinner walk around a little island just off the coast. We saw some wallabies and enjoyed some great ozzie nature.

Next stop: Halls gap, Grampians national park. To be continued...

You can show all our Great Ocean Road photo's here.

Glad you're having a great time! Sorry that Port Fairy wasn't all you hoped it would be, but of course it's not near over. Lots to do yet! =D You're not missing out on anything here... rain and cold weather. Jealous that you're coming back with a tan and I'm going to be all white and pasty!
